Brief Project Synopsis:

The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation’s (TGKVF) mission is to improve quality of life and promote philanthropy. It is our vision to enrich the lives of those we serve, our contributors, our beneficiaries and our communities — by being the premier provider of philanthropic and charitable services for all citizens in our region (www.tgkvf.org).  In the year ending December 31, 2007, the Foundation awarded $5,224,720.00 in grants to the Kanawha Valley community. Our Foundation awards health and nursing grants annually.

Built on a successful model of individual leadership development tested in WVNLI (www.wvnli.org), this project will offer a powerful solution to the challenge of team leadership development in nursing.  Given the need for teams to provide solutions to address the current health care quality and nursing workforce crisis, this program is designed to offer participating nursing teams the skills necessary to lead change in health care institutions. Ten to fifteen teams of nurses from WV will be engaged for 12 months through a series of four intensive onsite seminars, intersession work on team projects to influence patient outcomes, nurse empowerment, nurse satisfaction and retention of nurses in their home organization, development of team leadership and effectiveness skills, discussions via distance education methodologies, and ongoing mentorship by a leader in team development.

Project Goals and Objectives:

The goals of this program are to increase team leadership skills and team effectiveness skills in 10-15 teams of 3-4 nurses per team in Appalachian health care organizations during the program.
