Brief Project Synopsis:

To address the current nursing shortage in western Massachusetts the CAN DO Partnership is creating a seamless nursing education system to produce an adequate supply of diverse, qualified nurses.  The partners are engaged in a two year collaborative planning process and the implementation of two pilot projects. The pilots – STAR and Nurses Succeed –test different strategies related to student recruiting and retention, academic and employer support for continuing education, and career planning for nurses.  Through evaluation, the lessons from the pilots are being integrated into the overall planning process.

Project Goals and Objectives:

To create a seamless nursing education system unique to western Massachusetts, the CAN DO Partnership has set forth the following project goals:

  • Create a Plan:  By June 2008 create a strategic plan that details how to restructure the nursing educational advancement system in western Massachusetts, integrating lessons learned from the pilot programs and leveraging state-level work on entry level  nurse competencies
  • Solidify the Partnership:  Formalize the partnership to implement the project and the plan
  • Recruit Nursing Faculty: The STAR pilot will recruit, support and retain 10 BSN students and/or BSN prepared nurses in MSN, DNP or PhD programs with the intention of becoming nursing faculty by providing financial support, a support network and stronger employer/academic relationships
  • Increase the Success of Underrepresented Nurses: The Nurses Succeed pilot will increase the enrollment of underrepresented students in nursing education and their potential for success by strengthening the employer/higher education career coach model used in long term care facilities to support underrepresented CNAs and LPN’s interested in advancing their education
