Brief Project Synopsis:

Nurses can be the catalyst for significant health promotion and significantly improve health disparities.  To be effective, nurses need to be engaged in settings that promote health education.  The ideal place for such activities is in community locations that are easily accessible to clients.  Unfortunately, community agencies, public health departments and others have a difficult time recruiting and retaining public health nurses, especially from diverse populations.

Our project will address these issues through a two part approach to 1) ensuring that community health experiences are included in nursing education so that nursing students are encouraged to pursue community nursing and 2) establishing an internship in community nursing which will develop and test a structured role for effectively introducing students into community settings.  In real terms, this means that collegiate and community practicum representatives will jointly review, revise and test curriculum that reflects academic requirements and workplace realities.  This will also allow community settings to create or refine a public health nursing role which is consistent with community needs, both short and long term.

Project Goals and Objectives:

Raising the Bar’s first goal is to redesign and test training, practicum, placement and retention strategies for public health nursing.  Second, the partners will collaborate on strategies to increase the diversity of students choosing a public health nursing position.   Anticipated results include: 1) a nursing education/placement compact involving   academic institutions and public health departments, FQHC’s and community nursing sites, with support of state agencies and area health systems; 2) revamped BSN level curriculum; 3) traineeships and 1 year job placement for a group of at least 15 senior student nurses in varied community settings; 4) demonstrated level of success to encourage replication and expansion of the project model.
